If you'd like to have an opinion on a photo before uploading then please post it here and one of our screeners will be happy to take a look. Please only post a maximum of 6 images and please use external hosting rather than uploading to the queue and linking to them there.

Hello, There!

I'm starting this topic with a doubt...

Can I upload this as a "third rule"?

Image?

And witch category can I upload this? Any or none? :P

Image

Thank you so much!

Hi Francisco,

I think these crops could work if there was a clearer reason for doing them this way. In the first if there were another aircraft down in the bottom right to balance it then it would work a lot better but as it is there's no real clear reason for the aircraft being up there in the top left, so I think it would probably be a reject if I'm being honest.

Similarly actually with the second one. Closely cropped in and showing the runway clearer and less grass in the foreground would work quite well (assuming the quality was still there) but at the moment it looks a little unfocussed. Motive is very important when taking shots like these so when you're doing them ask yourself 'why am I taking it like this and what am I trying to show?' If there's no clear and immediate answer then a more conventional approach may work better. :)

Paul

Hello, Paul!

Thanks a lot to the tips!! The first photo will be stored in my personal collection. The second I'll see if it is possible crop without lose the quality!

And this? Is acceptable? Is the contrast ok?

Thanks so much!

Hi Francisco,

My sincere apologies for not replying, this one's just been screened although it's a little soft unfortunately. I'll try be more on the ball with future posts!

Hello everyone,

I managed to squeeze in a spotting trip on the 14th and came up with some shots that might be ok.

First of all I don't know if I'm doing this right so please correct me if I do make mistakes in sharing my photos.

Was wondering if this is ok to upload?

(Original RAW-file saved as .JPEG is available)

Thanks in advance.

Twan

Edit: Wow that's big. Is there an option to share the thumbnail that links to the full size photo?

Hi Twan, it indeed big but that's absolutely fine for use in this thread as we really need to see the 'full fat' edited image. :)

At the moment is quite oversharpened and lacking contrast/colour. What kind of workflow are you using at the moment?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for taking a look and for your feedback.

At the moment my workflow looks like this:
- Convert from .NEF to .DNG
- Open in ACR and correct the WB using temperature and tint according to the luminosity histogram
- Adding some Saturation and Vibrance usually no more than +5 (Not really know if this is correct, I just throw it in without really knowing what it does)
- Sharpen with 100% at 0.6
- Open to Photoshop and then level the horizon and crop it at 3:2
- Resize to 1600px
- Smart sharpen 50% at 0.3
- Apply NoiseNinja with normal settings (the way I downloaded it, currently don't know how to set it correctly)
- Save as .jpg

Link to the original (unedited and saved as.jpeg)
http://home.xmsnet.nl/splspotter/EHAM_14012012/DSC_0125_Original.jpg

I currently do not use the Curves options because I haven't read your tutorial yet. I am guessing the sharpening in ACR, PS and NN is a bit too much as the original isn't that sharp at all.

Thanks again.

Twan

Hi again Twan,

There doesn't seem to be anything there that should produce such oversharpening, do you maybe want to email the .DNG file you worked from and I'll have a quick go at editing it? As we use the same editing software I'll explain exactly what I've done, then you should get the same results if you use the same process.

If that would help then feel free to email me the .DNG (rather than the JPEG) to paul@focusonflight.net and I'll get right on with it. :)

Paul
